New Forest Goshawk 2012

This year we are monitoring a brand new nest in the North of The Forest.

This female has laid 5 eggs and has an attentive Male. We believe the final egg was laid between the 31st March and 4th April.

The first egg hatched at the end of April.

As the chicks are getting quite large and active, they will probably have their rings fitted shortly, and then we will hopefully know what sex they are.

At just after 2.45pm this afternoon the female was feeding the chicks when something flew to the right of the screen and then a few seconds later it flew past at the back. Not sure what sort of bird it was and what was going on. Was it the male chasing another bird? Is it possible to put that piece in slow motion please Peter?

We had another squirrel brought onto the nest this morning as well as a bird, which looked a bit like a pigeon, so the chicks are well fed!

We've just had a massive feed lasting about 20 minutes. All four chicks had full looking crops and by the end of the feed the biggest chick had turned away. After that our female flew off with the rubbish and then brought in a twig and settled down for some tidying up!

Well we have seen quite a bit of action on the nest this morning. At about 10.30am the male brought in some kind of mouse or rat. At 11.45am the female did a little better and arrived with a squirrel. This was also fed to the four chicks. At 12.10pm the male came and attempted to sit on all the chicks but he wasn't big enough! He left very quickly just as the female came back with the rear end of the squirrel.
