Hi all, whilst talking to another member some weeks back i did say i would put on this forum how i make my nest boxes.
I use any med size log i can find. Cut a length about12 in long and about 8in round minimum.
Cut a slice about 1 in off each end and put to one side for later.with a long drill ,drill a few pilot holes in centre of log from each end, and with a small chisel remove the centre of log till the outside is approx 1in thick.
If you have only a small drill create a hole big enough to allow a small bird access.
Replace the end pieces you cut off with a couple of long screws, and fix a bracket or nylon string loop to hang or mount the box. A good tip is to tack a plastic curtain ring around the entrance hole to deter woodpeckers enlarging the entrance.[ i said deter they will still try]
Another good tip is if you have bought from a garden centre a machine sawn nest box it will smell of new cut wood.
If you can find an old bird nest or two put them into a bucket and cover with hot water, dunk your new nest box into this soup and i find it takes the sawn smell away and gives the box a familiar smell to the birds that visit thus making them not so wary.
When you erect your box try to erect it away from any branch or obstruction that a preditor could use to access the box.
Give it a try you will gain a lot of satisfaction having birds nest in something you have made. GOOD LUCK AND MIND YOUR FINGERS. stan
