When working in the Forest I have heard many local place names mentioned that do not appear on an OS map. These must be old place names from the past that could eventually die out or their origin be lost.
Can anybody help build a list by providing: (a) place name, (b) location or OS grid referece, and (c) any details how the name came about.
Here are several places to start with: Tucker's Lane (Ladycross) Andrew's Mare(between Minstead, StoneyCross & Whithybeds) Nelly's Corner (Fritham)
thanks David
That's really interesting. Obviously local celebreties have been imortalised after their death by their peers. Whether these names were ever to make it onto official maps is another matter.
Tucker's Lane, Ladycross. In 1837, William Tucker was appointed Groomkeeper of what was known as Lady Cross Walk. Perhaps the lane was named after him.
