Wildlife Film Evenings Minimize
Wildlife Film Evenings 2008

Manuel Hinge has been a professional wildlife film-maker for over twenty years and has been involved with many of the big BBC Natural History series in that time. Each winter  he presents a selection of Wildlife and locally based films to audiences around the New Forest.

Six or more films are normally shown during the evening; some have been made specifically for the film evening while others may be exerts from longer films shot by Manuel for the BBC. Each film runs for approximately 10-15 minutes, and one film will be chosen by the audience from the 2007 selection as a chance to ‘see it again’.

The 2008 selection will include films about:
Pine Martens, Ducks, Deer, Dog-Sled Racing.....
And a few yet to be finalized.

At some of the venues Manuel invites a locally based wildlife society to raise their profile and their funds by providing refreshments, raffles or their society sales.

Lymington will see the return of the New Forest Badger Group and at Lyndhurst the Wessex branch of the British Deer Society also returns.

The dates for the Waterside and Ringwood events have yet to be finalized and there may be a showing in the north of the Forest.  Further dates and venues will be posted here.

Confirmed Venues Include:
LYMINGTON, LYNDHURST, HYTHE, LECKFORD & WOODGREEN

November 2007 - Place Names Minimize

We have recieved this email from D.Carruthers:

When working in the Forest I have heard many local place names mentioned that do not appear
on an OS map. These must be old place names from the past that could eventually die out or
   their origin be lost.

Can anybody help build a list by providing:
   (a) place name, (b) location or OS grid referece, and (c) any details how the name came about.
Here are several places to start with:
   Tucker's Lane (Ladycross)
   Andrew's Mare(between Minstead, StoneyCross & Whithybeds)
   Nelly's Corner (Fritham)

If you have any information contact us:    interested@newforestgateway.org

September 2007 - Adders / Live Minimize
New Forest Adders, live and dangerous....But from the safety of your own home

The "Wildcam" now focuses on Adders
Adders are relatively common in areas of rough, open countryside and are often associated with woodland edge habitats. They are less inclined to disappear into the surrounding undergrowth when disturbed and so are probably the most frequently seen of the three British snakes. During the summer there is a lot of frenzied activity on warm days, with males looking for females and occasionally wrestling with other males for supremacy. September sees the females giving birth to young.

July 2006 - NFG @ the New Forest Show Minimize

NFG AT THE NEW FOREST SHOW.

New Forest Gateway had its very first foray into the outside world in July 2006....The New Forest Show. Although the audio visual archive is still being compiled, NFG was able to show samples of the type and variety of images visitors to the site can expect. Some remarkable aerial photos of the New Forest taken in 1940 by the Luftwaffe (courtesy of Forestry Commission), were on show to the public for the very first time.
